Semiotics is the study of sign processes, which are any activity, conduct, or process that involves signs, where a sign is defined as anything that communicates something, usually called a meaning, to the sign's interpreter. (Wikipedia,2022)
Two of the semiotic instances found locally are the racial harmony symbol and the Singapore symbol. These will be the 2 examples, which will be explained below.
The racial harmony symbol represents a melting pot of cultures. It shows how harmonious Singapore is, representing the tight bond Singaporean have no matter their race and religion which makes them equal. Represented via the right photo showing kids of different races growing up together and respecting one another for who they are, also celebrating one another culture together be it in school or outside school as neighbors. Racial harmony is one of the important dates for Singapore which made it an icon for the country. During racial harmony day, logos are seen on the streets, on local channels, and in school as a reminder to Singaporeans of the importance of the day.
The Singapore symbol represents the heart of the lion city, which is also known for the little red dot. One representative of the Singapore symbol, which is a well-known tourist attraction is the Merlion statue near Marina Bay Sand. The Merlion statue is made into an icon for Singapore, which is why it is made as a symbol for Singapore that can be seen on the notes too. If a Singapore symbol is shown instantly, most people will be able to recognize it immediately, as the symbol is quite important and well-known throughout the world.
