China in Design

The institutions supporting design -

The government should not control designers, as most designers design based on what they think and hope to achieve in society. Which moves them to create what they have created.

For instance, what we can learn from design in China is the purpose of creating different buildings but having a similar kind of look or design with cutting edges, which creates a trickle-down effect on the local designers. These local designers came back to their own town after getting a degree from skilled overseas designers. Using the knowledge they have learned, they use it to design buildings or create art that relates it back to what they think their country is like today.

As different people have different opinions and they use design or art as a way to communicate how they feel. Hence, the government should not control the designers as they are expressing themselves through the designs they have created, and some come in useful to help the nation grow.

Foreign influences in design -

In Singapore, the acceptable foreign design influences will be eco-friendly and self-sustainability. One example would be Gardens By the Bay, which was built and designed by Wilkinson Eyre & Grant Associates, British.

Gardens by the Bay is a huge, colorful, futuristic park in the bay area of Singapore. Among the highlights are the famous Supertree structures. The gardens offer an impressive skywalk over the gardens as well as oversized greenhouses that replicate chilly mountain climates. (GBTB,2013)

It is self-sustainable because one of the ways in which they were designed cleverly is that the heating within the glass conservatories was minimized by the strategic placement of the beams. Additionally, the irrigation system was designed to maximize productivity. In addition, it is partially self-sufficient, producing power using its bio-waste or solar panels linked to its Supertrees. As a result, it is also eco-friendly.(GBTB,2013)

Another example would be Marina Bay Sands, which was built by Moshe Safdie, British.

Marina Bay Sands is the leading business, leisure, and entertainment destination in Asia. Our vision was to create a landmark that distinguishes Singapore from other cities by showcasing a timeless integrated development. (MBS,2021)

As of 2012, Marina Bay Sands' carbon footprint had been reduced by 33 percent. All lighting in the Sands SkyPark will be powered by solar energy from 536 solar panels. In this way, Marina Bay Sands is able to reduce carbon emissions by 70 metric tons per year. Moreover, Marina Bay Sands' sustainable purchasing policy provides guidelines to its vendors in order to encourage them to provide eco-friendly solutions, materials, and goods. (MBS,2021)

Hence, eco-friendly and self-sustainability is an acceptable foreign influence, which has integrated into Singapore.
