Cradle - To - Cradle

Project type: Writing

Designer(s): Chua Jia Ning, Sherica

Year: 2021

Project Description:

The intention is that through such an exercise, they will not only be more capable and articulate (textually and visually) in making connections between topics learned, but also that they will be able to encounter new ways of representing and discussing (textually and visually) not just the theories presented in class but also any ideas encountered outside of this course.

Both videos between 'Sunset Karang Guni’ and ‘Upcyclers: Giving things a second chance’, the difference is that the Karang Guni Man helps to collect unused items (e.g. newspapers, magazines, electronic and etc.) around The Housing and Development Board (HDB), after collecting he then proceeds to sell it to recycling companies. Whereas Jackie Tan, a designer, finds discarded items and turns them into usable products, like giving old items a second chance. For instance, he created a pyramid-shaped desk accessory made from reclaimed pallet wood.

After researching both sides of both articles, only Jackie Tan has applied the Cradle to Cradle design. Locally in Singapore, the company SGS Singapore is the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification company. Through cradle-to-cradle design, their company renews old items and thinks about how it can be turned into innovation in product design that is effective and positive for people and the environment.

They create the new design by using the 5 methods: material health, material utilization, renewable energy/carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, product certification is awarded at five levels (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). Globally one example will be William McDonough, who built the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products program to recognize the sustainability of products made by its clients and to inspire others to “rethink the way they make products." Which follows the two cycles of biological and technical.
