Arcades Project

'Arcade Project’ in

Singapore can be found in the streets of Chinatown. On 13 November 2001, the name of the street was changed from Smith Street to Chinatown Food Street. (Eresource,2021) Where it was converted to an outdoor eating area, which since then becomes a well-known area for people to gather to eat and chat.



This was part of the Chinatown redevelopment project spearheaded by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (now Singapore Tourism Board) and supported by various government and grassroots agencies. Attractions on this food street are hawker kiosks, shophouses restaurants, and ad hoc street kiosks that offer specialty dishes from the main Chinese dialects. This section of the street used to be closed to traffic in the evening. (Eresource,2021)


In 2001, after Chinatown food street was named it was more for the tourist to come into Singapore to experience what was like, although the original Kreta Ayer hawkers spirit and nature have changed. (Johorkaki,2021) As years pass by new becomes an old and new designer comes in to provide new ideas on “How can we improve this space?” adapt. In 2018, a newly constructed high-ceiling glass canopy shelter and internal spot cooling system allow diners to indulge in culinary pleasures regardless of rain or shine. The latest dining attraction in Singapore will be available for Adhoc collaborations, be it for the celebration of various Chinese festivals or any other private functions.
